Best of Vietnam

The north is Vietnam at its wildest, its most mountainous, its most remote. Visitors using the charming old capital Hanoi as an entry point can easily spend a couple of weeks exploring all the north has to offer. Hanoi itself can easily take up several days, especially when combined with a cruise on nearby Halong Bay. Those venturing further afield can explore the scenic mountain town of Sapa, visit stunning Mai Chau valley, climb Vietnam's highest peak, Mt Fansipan, and marvel at the beautiful countryside of Ba Be National Park and Cao Bang.

Vietnam's capital is a beguiling mix of colonial charm and Asian bustle, from the peaceful wooded walks of Hoan Kiem Lake to the cauldron of energy that is the Old Quarter. Many visitors spend days simply wandering around the picturesque old streets, stopping for the occasional coffee at one of the city's many cafes. Delicious local cuisine and a growing number of expat-orientated restaurants and bars make for an increasingly lively nightlife, while the city boasts more quaint boutique hotels than anywhere else in Vietnam.

Love to travel looking for cheap destinations

Halong Bay

If Vietnam has one stand-out 'marquee' attraction, then this is it, nearly 2,000 limestone islands seemingly dropped into 1553㎢ of green sea. Pick the right boat and visitors can enjoy a magical 2-3 days cruising slowly through some of the most astonishing scenery in Asia, whilst sunbathing on board or sipping cocktails on deck. The increasing availability of intimate private boat hire makes Halong Bay a perfect honeymoon destination too.

Mai Chau

With its simply stunning mountain scenery, rich tapestry of ethnic hilltribes and a wealth of cycling and trekking activities, all within four hours of Hanoi, it's amazing that Mai Chau- features on so few visitor itineraries. But if you want friendly stilthouse homestays, mountain biking as gentle or as challenging as you want, and adventurous mountain trekking, it's simply unmissable. Don't forget your camera (and a BIG memory card) - the views are incredible.
