Tourist Attractions

Tan Trao Historical Site

Tan Trao is a small valley lying between mountains and jungles in Son Duong District, 40km from Tuyen Quang City and 200km from Ha Noi. It was used as a resistance base before the August 1945 Revolution. It is also where the Indochina Communist Party first carried out the National Congress (13 August 1945). At the National Assembly held on August 1945 in Tan Trao, "the great policies of Viet Minh were drawn and a temporary government lead by Ho Chi Minh was elected".
The main places of interest include Tan Trao Communal House, Hong Thai Communal House and a small jungle hut where President Ho Chi Minh lived from June to August 1945.
From Ha Noi, travel via National Highway 3 through Thai Nguyen (80km), continue 10km to Bo Dau. Turn left along Highway 37 and go about 45km to Son Duong. Then, turn right for 16km.

Tan Trao Communal House

This is a small communal house in Tan Lap Village dedicated to the mountain and river Deities. Tan Trao Communal House was built in 1923, according to the style of stilt houses with wooden pillars. It consists of three chambers and two lean-tos, a fan-palm leaf covered roof and a wood board paved floor.
In this communal house, all representatives from throughout the country met and participated in the first National Assembly on 16 August 1945. The National Assembly reached an agreement on the nation-wide uprising and put forward the Party's insurrection order and the 10 key policies of the Viet Minh.
These policies stated that the national flag would be a red flag with a yellow star, the national hymn would be the "Troop marching song" and the Viet Nam National Liberation Committee (which was the Provisional Government presided over by Ho Chi Minh) would be established.
President Ho Chi Minh took a sacred oath in Tan Trao Communal House on the occasion of appearing before the public for the first time.

Tan Trao Banyan Tree

Under this secular tree, about 100m from Tan Trao Communal House, Viet Nam liberation troops organised the marching ceremony, which was graced by the Tan Trao people and 60 representatives of the National Assembly. General Vo Nguyen Giap read the military order document No1 and the troops marched through Thai Nguyen to liberate Ha Noi.

Bong Cave

Bong Cave is located in the middle of Bong Mountain with the twisting and curving Day River at the bottom, not very far from Hong Thai Communal House. Uncle Ho stayed in this cave from 1950 to 1951. On 22 February 1950, he signed a decree to mobilise people and resources for a resistance war. On 25 July 1950, he answered questions raised by journalists on the interference of America in the independence of Indochina. Also, from this cave, Uncle Ho directed the border campaign of 1950 and participated in the second National Party Congress in 1951.

Na Hang Nature Reserve

Na Hang Nature Reserve is contiguous to Ba Be Lake, a famous tourist attraction in the North. It unfolds a quite thick vegetation cover, and over 1,000 plant species, including rare and valuable ones such as the dinh, mun (ebony trees), sen (bassia). It is home to 79 animai species, such as tiger, panther, flying weasel, flying squirrel, bear, antelope, deer, ape, and so on. Especially, its upturned-nosed monkey (Rhinopitecus avunculus) has been listed in the World Red Book. The forest also shelters 263 winged animal species, such as pheasant, ga tien, phoenix, as well as 35 frog species; 25 reptile species; and over 500 insect species.

Mo Waterfall (Thac Mo)

Thac Mo (Dream Waterfall) located amid the Na Hang Natural Reserve, 100km of Tuyen Quang City, is a wonderful ecological tourist attraction. The road to Thac Mo is convenient. One can hear the noise of water pouring far from above. The closer visitors draw to the waterfall, the cooler they feei. It seems as if visitors were in a fairy land when they stand in front of the waterfall. Its water pours into the lake lying at the foot of the mountain. Visitors can take a small boat to reach the waterfall. When boating, they can relax and admire the picturesque setting around it. The waterfall with the silver hues is composed of 3 layers. To reach the second layer, visitors have to climb up 100m by a rope ladder. At the foot of the second layer, there is a small and pure lake. Here, visitors will see the imposing landscape with the caves, which have beautiful stalactites and stalagmites. The water flows slowly through the green moss-covered rocks, which look like a velvet rug. Keeping rope ladder climbing, visitors will reach the third layer. Water pours very strongly. The coolness of water seems to drive back the exhaustion of visitors, and to bring about a new feeling for them when they stand at the top to have a panoramic view of Na Hang Town, which is surrounded by 99 mountains. They can walk into the primitive forest to discover wonderful things. The sounds of the waterfall, birds and gibbons, and silver light going through the thick layers will make visitors feel as if they were in the prehistoric time.

My Lam Hot Spring

My Lam Hot Spring is located 15km from Tuyen Quang City. The source of the mineral water maintains a temperature of 62°C (144°F) and contains sulphur, magnesium, calcium and other minerals with therapeutic qualities.

Festivals

"Qua Tang" Festival of Dao Ethnic Group

This is the festival of the Dao ethnic group in which boys who are 18 or older observe ini-tiatory rituals and are then granted the honour of entering adult society. Then, gongs, cymbals and pan-pipes are played in lively folk songs. Everyone sings, dances, drinks wine and enjoys fun games.

Gieng Tanh Village Festival

This annual festival takes place in the spring at the temple, in Gieng Tanh Village, Yen Son District, in the area of the Cao Lan people. Ngoc Son and Nghiem Son, two heroes who are remembered for their services in fighting against aggressors, were residents of this area. After the festival rituals, there are many special games such as nem con (a game in which boys and girls throw cloth balls), swinging and folk dance performances.
